Any room in here for Marines? I was on the Alamo for WestPac 86. We participated in Team Spirit 86 during that float. Also shot video of all ships floating around Iwo Jima remembering our lost brothers 41 years earlier. I'm surprised the history page doesn't mention that excercise. I still have my sand in a piss bottle!...thank you Seal Teams. We were all mad the Seals were the only ones let on the island. Oh well we did get helicopter rides over the island, a good dinner and "The Sands of Iwo Jima" for a movie that night. Thank you to all the Sailors manning the ship for that WestPac. You know us Marines we always need a ride somewhere. Lcpl Joel A. Vermettti 1st Bn 11th Marines, 1st MarDiv 84-88.

Nice site.My dad Irving T Havenner,he went by Earl, was on the Alamo I think from 1959 until 1961 or 62. His brother Frank was on with him some of the time. Dad recently passed away on August 6 2005, from lung cancer and complications from wounds suffered when in the army while serving in Veitnam. He was buried at Arlington Cemetary. I thought I would mention him,Maybe some of the men he served with might remember him. Marc F Havenner Bohannon Va 8-05

I love this site, I am currently still in the Navy and on my Dream tour as we speak. I was on The Alamo from 1990-92 when I was part of the last voyage she took as well as the Decomissioning crew. I got to lower the Last Union Jack and kept it. out of 5 ships I was on, she would be the only one I would actually love to be stationed on again. I was looking in your crew list for the members, is thier anyone part of the association that is from my time frame? also is thier going to be another reunion soon?? thanks IT1(SW/AW) Buchholz Stationed: IMF Bangor Wa.

Hello! My name is Stphanie Alleman. I have been looking for my Father Robert Bruce Robertson. He served on the Alamo for as best as I know between 1982-1984 give or take a few years. I beleive he was a mechanic and he had a brother named Charles who was also in the navy . It is said that he was from Georgia. I know that he had a Zig-Zag Man tattoo on his iside forearm. Blond hair and blue eyes. If you have a picture of him in a West-Pac Book or information about him or know him please E-mail me. I neeed to find him. I have looking for him for 21 years. I have never seen his face. If you are reading this, Robert, I want you to know that I grew up proud of you and that I love you. I wanted to be in the military so much. Damn the stupid (women) are not allowed to have the fun jobs rule. As a little kid I found a USS Alamo Blue hat in a garage sale I bought it and spent 10 years wearing that hat(till it fell of my head because i wore it out). I did not know at the time that you had been stationed on the Alamo. I am married to a wonderful man, just bought our first house and have a full life with loving parents, But I want you in my life. I want to know my father and that place in my heart is still empty. Please find me. My e-mail is wizardanddragon@aol.com. I now live in Louisiana.

I served on the Alamo from August 1970 until April 1972. I was just a kid then, just 1 year out of high school. I grew up fast and the Alamo taught me many things I still use in my life. At the time it was not where I wanted to be but looking back it was a good time to be young and foolish. I look at my son now and think that a few years in the navy may not be a bad thing for him. Times are different now. Well any way Drink a San Migel beer and smile. Gordon Riddoch

I was the best friend of Mike Abbott (signalman I think). He left the Alamo in July 74, when he was honorably discharged from the navy. He came home to Houston, Tx. with a buddy on leave from the Alamo. His name was also Mike from Appleton, Wi. We left Houston in Mike Abbott's Lincoln Mercury Capri (Small), to take his buddy home to Appleton for the rest of his leave. We were driving straight through. Abbott drove to West Memphis where his buddy took over around midnight as we headed up the Mississippi on I-55. As we neared Hayti, Mo, I-55 narrowed to 2 way traffic. Abbott was asleep in the back seat and I was riding shotgun. Mike(driving) and I noticed a long line of cars approaching, around a long curve, with one pair of lights in our lane. We slowed and moved to the shoulder leaving plenty of room for the vehicle to pass. Unfortunately the driver was asleep at the wheel of an 18 wheeler full of corn. We pulled off the shoulder to avoid him but he ran off the road and hit us head on. I walked away from it but Mike the driver was banged up pretty bad and my best friend, Mike Abbott passed away. I am writing this just in case anyone was wandering what ever happened to him. Please add Mike Abbott to your taps list, thanks. Patrick Logan tapnagol1@sbcglobal.net

i was transferred to the alamo from the uss okinawa lph-3 in the middle of a west-pac in 1980. I was only onboard about one week from about april 30 - may 5. during that week we crossed the equator, May 3, 1980. The day after my 19th birthday. I'll never forget that day, what an initiation! I had received orders for BT "A" school and the alamo transported me, and several others who were also returning to the states, to Diego Garcia where we spent the night before boarding a flight the next day. During my week on the Alamo I did get a chance to stand duty a few days and got to do a "bottom blow" on the boilers. Even though I only spent one week out of my four year navy career on the Alamo, she's has a special place in my memory because I crossed the equator on her. Good luck to all. You had a great ship.
